Social Perception of Juvenile Crime: A Psychopedagogical Approach from Educational Diagnosis in Greater Buenos Aires
Main Article Content
Abstract
This article explores how people in Greater Buenos Aires perceive youth crime from a psycho-pedagogical perspective. We use educational diagnosis as a way to understand society’s ideas about why young people commit crimes. The aim was to identify and compare the views of people from different social groups and examine what shapes their beliefs about causes, blame, and possible solutions to youth crime.
For the study, we surveyed 200 people aged 18 to 65 from different socioeconomic backgrounds. The results showed that opinions vary according to respondents’ social position: those with fewer resources tend to see youth crime as the result of broader structural problems such as poverty and lack of education, while middle- and upper-class respondents more often relate it to family-related issues. In addition, nearly 70% of participants said they form their views based on the media.
From a psycho-pedagogical standpoint, we understand these beliefs as socially learned constructs that end up labeling young people and making it harder to grasp the complexity of the problem. We conclude that education can help transform these perceptions and encourage a more empathetic and responsible view of youth.
